His Grandmother clapped her hands when Tan opened this drawer.

‘Ugh! What's this funny thing?' Tan asked her

‘It's staring at me, like an eye?'

‘It is an eye, ' she told him.

‘My sister Kim has one real eye you know.  The other is glass. When Kim was young, the oculist in a nearby town loved her. He wanted to marry her.  He made her a set of glass eyes, of every shade of brown. And then one green! When I was leaving Vietnam, she gave me this one to remember her by.'

‘What did you wish for?' Tan asked.

‘I wished that one day I would see my sister Kim again.'

‘And did you?'

His Grandmother sighed,  ‘Not every wish comes true, I'm afraid. She's away over the sea, and I am here.'

‘I wonder which drawer you'll open next, Tan?

Which one will it be?'
